President’s Independence Day Message

Congratulations on celebrating Jamaica’s 64th independence anniversary. Those of us old enough can remember the pageantry and festivities of August 6, 1962. Some of us still have memorabilia.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their effort and contribution to the KYMCA Jamaica Foundation’s push to help the YMCA movement in Jamaica to create a pathway for the underserved in Jamaica to gain independence. We provide assistance to the YMCA movement in Jamaica to support efforts in various endeavors.

We coordinated relief efforts in Westmorland immediately after  hurricane Melissa. These efforts resulted in

  •  Over 800 care packages delivered to members of Westmorland communities

  •  30 computers delivered to schools in the area

  • 23 generators delivered to schools, hospital, churches and and the police

  • 250 toys to children at a fun day 6 days before Christmas

  • Replacing the roof of the Y’s Mennettes community center in Savanna-La-Mar

  • 650 hot meals delivered between Westmorland and St. Mary

  • Provision of washing machine and dryer to the Infirmary in St Mary

  • 350 care packages to the registered poor in St Mary

In Kingston our efforts resulted in

  • A substantial grant to repair the accommodation used by the YDP to provide education to at risk boys

  • Sponsorship of 25 campers from underserved communities to attend camp at Kingston YMCA

  • Continued assistance to the aquatic program to improve facilities and efficiencies

  • Supplies to be used in the YDP program

  • Treats for end of term celebrations

  • Bun and cheese for staff and students at Easter

As we move forward, there are many activities and efforts that are being examined to decide on next steps.

Independence means you can make your own choices, govern your own life, and stand on your own without needing help from others. The KYMCA Jamaica Foundation continues to strive to support the YMCA movement in Jamaica to provide the pathway to independence for the at risk and underserved members of Jamaica.
